I am a little confused whther you are talking about the crest which sits on the top of the helmet in a coat of arms or the shield. There is unfortunately a habit in the USA of refering to the coat of arms as a crest.
The elephants head was used as crest by a number of Saunders families in the UK one from London where it sits on a coronet and another three from Oxfordshire, Bucks and Northampton, and Hertfordshire. Most of the other Buswell families entitled to use a coat of arms used a bull or part of a bull as their crest. One family used a tree with a hawkes lut hanging from its branches on either side.
I said families because of course a coat of arms can only be used by an individual, descending from father to eldest son.
In theory in Europe one can be sued for using a coat of arms which has not been formally granted to the individual. It is many years since this has happened to an individual although it has happened more recently to companies use CofA to which they are not entitled.
The really interesting question is whether your neighbour is actuslly entitled to use the coat of arms.
