I've since discovered a lot about my maternal grandfather Joseph Richard SAYERS. According to his birth certificate he was born Joseph Richard SAYER on 2.11.1898 at LANE ENDS, HUNWICK, DURHAM and by the time he married in September 1923, he'd changed his name to SAYERS.

His parents were Alfred SAYER and Jane Ann SAYER (nee RIPPON). He was a colliery mason and was born in Great Cressingham, Norfolk in about 1856.

He had two sisters Caroline SAYER b.1855 and Emily SAYER b.1859.

Their father was Richard SAYER b.1828, an agricultural labourer, and Emma SAYER b. 1833. Both were also born in Great Cressingham.
