I had missed information about Cali, but I have some ancestral information in my 2003 publications, SAYRE FAMILY, Vol. I & II as follows:
ALONZO CURTIS SAYRE, son of Elijah, was born 11 June 1837 in Meigs County, Ohio, to a woman with the surname “Greer.” One census report indicated that her birthplace was New York. Only the surname, “Greer” was revealed on Alonzo’s death certificate* for his mother’s name. (*obtained in 1994 by Rodney Allen Sayre, a descendant.) Much speculation and research has gone into identifying his mother, but as of this writing, nothing definite has been discovered. Two possibilities are Martha (Monroe) Greer, wife of William who drowned in 1837, and Isabell Greer, b. about 1818, youngest daughter of John and Jane (Callihan) Greer. If Curtis’ mother was really born in New York, that would eliminate Isabell. If it was Martha Elizabeth (Monroe) Greer (1802-1879), then the ancestral line should be Monroe instead of Greer. There are conflicting reports on the time of birth of Martha’s youngest Greer child, William Thomas, one being 1835 and the other 1837 (Hardesty). If it is 1837, then she wouldn’t be Alonzo’s mother.
That area of Jackson County was part of Mason County until 1831. There was traffic both ways across the Ohio River at Letart. When Alonzo Curtis Sayre was born in 1837, the mother was allegedly in Meigs County, Ohio. By Census information, a John Greer was the first of the name to be found in Mason County 1820. He allegedly came there in 1807. A William Greer was a head of a household in Mason County 1830 Virginia Census. Both William and John Greer were among the 342 signatures on the 8 December 1830 petition to for a new county of Jackson, (W.) Virginia.
“Curtis” spent much of his time in the home of his grandparents (Daniel #1329 and Sarah Hall Sayre) while he was growing up. He was listed in their household in the 1850 Jackson County, Virginia census. Mostly, he never used the name “Alonzo” in his adult life. He either used “Curtis” or a nickname “Hobbie.”
An incident concerning his boyhood passed down and recalled by some of the family in Jackson County follows: “Sarah (Hall) Sayre, described as a large, stout woman, was a firm believer in ‘Spare the rod, and spoil the child.’ One time, as she was paddling Curtis, she happened to look up and thought she saw his mother watching them through the window. The illusion seemed real enough that she became less strict with him afterward, and she never paddled him again.” (Ref.: reminiscences of Thomas Edison Sayre).
Alonzo Curtis Sayre married in Mason County, (West) Virginia 10 October 1859 OLIVE BOONE TILLIS, who was born 2 January 1843 in Mason County (West) Virginia to Richard and Elizabeth (Van Bibber) Tillis. Olive was believed to have been named for her mother’s aunt, Olive Van Bibber, who married Nathaniel, youngest son of Daniel Boone. Richard’s father was David, son of Richard Tillious. The Tillis surname is believed to have been Scottish and one time spelled “Tillious.”
Indications are that “Curtis” and family migrated from West Virginia sometime before 1868, first settling at Devon, Kansas, near Fort Scott. According to a short history written in Austin Allen’s funeral booklet, the family went by wagon train [probably in the 1870’s. RS] to Iowa. In 1900, the Alonzo Curtis Sayre family lived in Galena Township, Jasper County, Missouri.Olive had given birth to nine children of which six were still living. Curtis and Olive died in Missouri (Ref: Greenlee Genealogy). Olive died about 1918 from complications of the Spanish Influenza. She was buried in the Liberty Cemetery, south of Stockton, Missouri. Alonzo Curtis Sayre’s cemetery marker read, “A. C. SAYRE 1831 - 1927.” His body was buried in the Hickory Grove Cemetery between Stockton and Humansville. His death record gave 8 November 1929 as his death date. The cause given was “probably cancer.” Children of Curtis and Olive B. (Tillis) Sayre:
1. RICHARD MARION SAYRE married MATILDA CHANEY
2. CASSANDRA JANE SAYRE, born 3 December 1862.
3. JENNIE SAYRE, born about 1864.
4. SUSAN SAYRE, born about 1867.
