Adolphus Monell Sayre is not in my direct lineage, but information from the SAYRE FAMILY … (1901) by Theodore M. Banta, p. 326, gives:
(Archibald-6; Ephraim-5; Daniel-4; Daniel-3; Joseph-2; Thomas)
ARCHIBALD-6 SAYRE, b. Bottle Hill (Now Madison) New Jersey 28 April 1776; married 3 February 1802 Martha-6 Sayre, daughter of Jonathan-5 Sayre of Orange County, New York, who was born 11 July 1781 and died 16 March 1855.He was a farmer at Madison, NJ, where he died 31 January 1841.
10th Child, person number 1729 was ADOLPHUS MONELL-7 SAYRE, b. 22 April 1822 at Bottle Hill, NJ, and married 5 April 1849 Julia Randolph Woodruff. He died 13 January 1855 and his widow remarried a Hunting of New York. She died 22 February 1895.Child of Adolphus and Julia:
ADOLPHUS MONELL-8 SAYRE, b. 27 October 1850 in New York City; married in 1872, Mary Anne Stewart. He graduated from Fort Washington Military Institute and became a Civil Engineer. He died in Madison, NJ, 18 October 1875.Child of Adolphus and Mary:
ADOLPHUS MONELL-9 SAYRE, b. 21 November 1875.He studied at Harvard University.
Banta indicates that Adolphus-8 was born in New York City.He does not give a birth place for Adolphus-9.Since he was born a month after his father died in Madison, NJ, we might assume that he was born in NJ.Madison is verified as his birth place on his passport and passenger lists. So a birthplace in “Bronx” is very probably incorrect.Banta indicated Adolphus Sr. and Mary Anne were married, and since he was deceased already when Adolphus Jr. was born, he found no other children.
I found this further with Google searching on the Internet:
Mr. Monell Sayre, a Harvard man and a graduate in law, is a specialist in college charters, pensions, and in agricultural education.
“The Harvard Speakers. Published: Friday, May 01, 1896
“A. M. SAYRE '98.Adolph Monell Sayre '98, the youngest of the three Harvard speakers, is 20 years of age. He was educated at the Columbian Academy, graduating with valedictory honors. He won the medal for highest scholarship each year of his course and in Senior year took the Montague medal in Latin, the Roone medal in Greek and the Lodge medal in English. After completing his undergraduate course he entered the Columbian Law School and graduated second in a class of eighty-six. His graduating thesis on "The Interstate Commerce Clause of the Constitution," received the first award.
“In his first year at the Law School he was chosen one of the representatives from his class in an annual debating contest and secured first prize. It was the first time an underclassman had succeeded against the older rivals.
“Last year he represented the Columbian University in a joint debate with Georgetown and his side was successful. In the summer of '94 he was a student at the University of Virginia Law School.
“Since entering Harvard last fall as a special student, he has given his time mainly to Economics, History and English. He is a member of the Harvard Union and is taking English 30. He is treasure of the St. Paul's Society.”
