Captain Risher was Joseph Koger Risher, the only son of Francis Fontaine Risher and Harriett Williams Risher who were first cousins. Joe had a sister Adaline Risher. Their father Frank was in his early twenties when he passed away.

Harriett Williams Risher remarried. Her second husband was Colonel/ Sheriff George Warren. Their children are Capt Risher's half brothers and sisters.

Captain Risher did survive the war and returned to his home in Colleton County. He spent his final days in Bamberg County and was buried in the South End Cemetery (refered to as the New Cemetery at the time) in Bamberg, SC.

Some researchers credit Captain Risher's Confederate service to an older uncle, also named Joseph Koger Risher. The uncle was about twenty five years older than his nephew. Apparently because the two men lived in the same general area some people refered to the younger man as junior even though he was not the older man's son.
