I am trying to find the parents of my Syntha Cane, who married Simpson Moore 19 Aug 1827 in Jones County Ga. Someone in the family sent me this: On 3 June 1912, Winfield Taylor Moore supposedly wrote to Mattie Gurr Lamar, (the original of which has not been exibited): "Your grandmother Mary Cane, was a Norwood and was born in North Carolina, and her father, Thomas Norwood was in the Revolution and was with Washington in the Jerseys during that campaign. He was wounded at the Battle of Cowpens. My grandmother when I was a boy used to talk of the war in Jones County, in 1829." There is enough circumstantial detail there that I thought I should at least look for Mary Cain and Thomas Norwood. The Thomas Norwood who served in the Revolution from the Abbeville branch of the Norwoods is too young to be Mary’s husband – she was b. abt 1770, according to the censuses. The Thomas in Cheraws/Darlington is just right, and is with a Mary Cain in the censuses in Darlington in 1800, 1810. I’m wondering if anyone out there has any evidence to support or refute this. Here’s everything I’ve figured out so far. I have not been able to go to Georgia, so this came from the web. There was a Norwood at the Battle of Cowpens, but I haven't figured out who yet.. This could be important: Contents of Darlington Flag 1989 – 2003 VOLUME XIII, 2001 No. 2, Spring, 2001- Petition from Inhabitants of St. David’s Parish, 1786; Thomas Norwood, Revolutionary War Service; 1790 Cheraws Thomas Norwood Male 16 and up male under 16 male under 16 female female female female 1800 Darlington: Thomas Norwood Male over 45 Female over 45 female 10 thru 15 Mary cain female 26 thru 44 female 26 thru 44 female under 10 female under 10 1810 Darlington Sc Hannah norwood [presumably widow of one of Thomas’s sons] female 26 thru 44 [b. bet 1766 and 1784] she must have been 21 by 1792, when she got land from her father [[see below]], so born bef 1771--therefore between 1766 and 1771] male 10 thru 15 female 10 thru 15 female 10 thru 15 male under 10 female under 10 female under 10 Mary Cain female 26 thru 44 [b bet 1766 and 1784] female 10 thru 15 female under 10 female under 10 a bit mysterious. Mary is probably the grandmother Taylor remembers in Jones County, since she was living with his parents at the time, so apparently she had Cynthia after she was widowed [or whatever] and living next door to her father. Thomas Norwood [b bef 1775] male 45 and over female 45 and over female 10 thru 15 War of 1812 Three norwoods served from Georgia, including Britton, who is said by some to have been Thomas’s son, though I’ve seen no evidence given for that… 1816 there is a Thomas norwood in the Jones Co. GA Tax List, Capt Greens's District #378. Mary norwood and Hannah Norwood are not listed. 1820 Thomas may have died. In Gren’s district 1820 census, Wm. Rowell and William Tooley are the only neighbors of Thomas's I found who were still there. I decided they had rejiggered the districts, and looked for Thomas’s neighbors from the tax list. Thomas is gone, but I found mary near Lucinda Howell and James Locke. Mary Cane female 45 and over Female 16 under 26 female 16 under 26 female 16 under 26 female 10 under 15 male under 10 female under 10 hannah Norwood is not there. It looks to me as though Mary has taken in Hannah's three youngest children. 1827 Cynthia was married in Jones County GA I can’t find Mary in 1830, but she is living with Synthia and Simpson in the 1840 and 1850 censuses. I found this in the SC Archives index, but working on line cannot get the document. Most lilkely assumption is that Hannah was a Teele, and married Thomas Norwood's son.
