This may not be much help?

1840 Darlington County Census:

JOHN THOMAS, SR.
2 males 0-5
1 male 40-50
1 male 70-80
1 female 0-5
3 females 5-10
1 female 10-15
1 female 30-40

JOHN THOMAS, JR.
1 male 15-20
1 male 20-30
1 male 50-60
1 female 10-15
1 female 50-60

WILLIAM P. BEST
1 male 0-5
1 male 5-10
1 male 20-30
1 male 30-40
1 female 0-5
2 females 5-10
1 female 20-30

In my files I have a John Thomas , Sr. born abt. 1777 in Bertie County, NC & died in Pike County, Alabama. He was married Sarah Cotten Culpepper 1783-1855.
I believe that they were in Darlington County in between for a time? John Thomas's siblings were Micajah Thomas, Clarissa Thomas, Nancy Thomas and possibly more, don't know who the parents were? Micajah Thomas married Prudence Kelley, Clarissa Thomas married James Suggs, and Nancy Thomas married Abel Register............all these families stayed in Darlington. This MAY NOT BE your John Thomas, just thought the similiarities were there?

Good Luck!
Jeff
