This Dukes-Langdale connection is very interesting. I had no idea there were possible links beyond the will period.

If it helps any in looking at the relationship from your end, I can summarize a little of what we know about Barbara. She was the second wife of Joseph Duke (the name became Dukes in Orangeburg) and was probably originally Barbara Fuster, daughter of German-Swiss immigrant John Fuster. Her mother was a Tobler, niece of Johannes Tobler, founder of the New Windsor township on the Savannah. We haven't proved Joseph Dukes' origins (although a DNA test is now out for analysis that will help) but he was probably from the Duke family of the James River area in Virginia.

Joseph and Barbara had two sons. George Alexander Dukes disappears from South Carolina records after the Revolutionary War. Michael Dukes stayed in Orangeburg and apparently had three sons: Michael, Thomas, and Isaac. Michael's line was fairly prolific in the very early 1800's and then becomes hard to trace. It looks like all but one of the males in his line may have either died out or left SC sometime around 1820-30. Most of the surviving Dukes in Orangeburg County are descended from Joseph's son with his first wife, Margaret Hazelwood (actually Eisenhut, another German-Swiss); this oldest son wasThomas Dukes.

There is detailed information on this Dukes family at www.att.net/~ztlcox/

If any of this jogs a thought on the connection I'd like to know about it. Thanks!
