Debra,

Thank you for your reply!

Per my Neal records, many of my information came from family research that was shared with me. I have done research on my own to back up mostly what I have been given, except having trouble with the parent's of our Charles Neal, husband of Jemima Davenport. Places show his birth in VA, however I haven't connected him there, and other places show his birth in SC, as well as a sister, Mary, who married Francis Marion Beeks and died in Laurens County, SC and a mother Mary ?. No burial records for Charles or Mary in Newberry, SC either.

There is a history of Mt. Pisgah, TN listed under the Giles County, TN site http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tngiles/hist/pisgah.htm
which you might find helpful, if you haven't located it already. Betty Moore, a relative of ours, submitted it to the website. Betty's husband is a descendant of the Allen Pitts, wife Mary Neal line-and daughter of Charles & Jemima Davenport Neal.

In another book by a Matthias Neal's(son of Charles & Jemima) great-grandson, Paul E. Daugherty, who is now deceased, wrote about the Charles Neal's in Newberry, SC being father and son. They lived close to Bush River in Newberry District, SC. Thinking back, there were land records showing the land that Charles Neal, the elder, owned and I believe sold by son Charles, the younger, after his death. Sorry, I haven't seen this record for a while, and I don't have it recorded on my FTM yet. With only Charles to go on, without whole given names, siblings or parent's, it has been difficult to get past the younger Charles or connect him properly.

With my granddad telling of the dropping of the "O" in the original spelling of Neal, plus the strong Irish brogue by Wiley Neal his granddad, I had a feeling that Charles Neal's (younger) father was the one from Ireland, which would have been Wiley Neal's grandfather. With my dad telling of me having some Scottish from a grandmother, that put me researching at the top of Ireland closest to Scotland. Of course, that is where Hugh O'Neal, Earl of Tyrone, came from, and where a lot of the fightings took place in Northern Ireland. Going back to my granddad's comment about the reason of one of the grandfather's dropping the "O" from O'Neal makes since due to the apparent tempers of the brothers, possibly.

Also with the Charles Neal, Sr. listed in the Newberry, SC records which shows he had a daughter, others have her listed as Mary, who married Francis Marion Beeks. She went to Laurens County, TN and is buried there at Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

I know that families named their children after siblings or parent's, so there are many of the same given name in each family generation. I will check out all of the names you have listed. In an old email from Betty Moore, named another family member had a Jonathan connected to Charles (younger), which I haven't been able to connect.

I show Mary Neal Wells buried at Mt. Pisgah Cemtery, however I do not have a place of burial for William H. "Ransom" Wells, Sr. Do you show that info on your records? However when we were visiting the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery about ten years ago, Charles (younger) was buried there and no headstone for Jemima. In the Paul E. Daugherty book, listed her buried at Bunker Hill, a small community near there, which was originally called Indian Creek.

Another book by Michael J. O'Brien, talking about the Irish Settlers and Revolutionary Soldiers, pages 167-175, Newberry, SC mentioned O'Neal, not Neal/Neil/Neill. Apparently the Neal's of Newberry, are the imigrants from Ireland, and the one's who dropped the "O." One of the books listed the arrival at Charleston, SC, however I haven't connected them with any passenger lists, which I have tried for many years to accomplish.

Also in an email that I have from Betty Moore, she stated that Henry E. Pitts, son of Allen & Sarah Neal Pitts, moved to Lamar County, TX in about 1855, along with Matthias Neal, son of Charles & Jemima and brother to my Wiley. Wiley's son, Dr. Wiley Washington Neal of Giles County, TN, followed his Uncle Matthias Neal, who was son of Charles & Jemima Davenport Neal, to TX a few years later for the TX Homesteading land, per my uncle, and settled on a farm in Rockwall County, TX (located on Pullen-off SH 205), and later moving to Sulphur, Murray County, OK.

Charles Neal, the elder, had already died by the 1810 Census and the only Charles Neal listed is Jemima's husband the younger Charles Neal. The 1800 Census of Newberry, SC does list the two Neal's -Neel's- next to each other. They are also listed in the 1790 Census of Newberry, SC.

I will also do more research into the others you have mentioned.

Our Charles Neal (younger) is buried on Mt. Pisgah at the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, behind the church. He was married to Jemima Davenport, and I have dates of 1772-1846 on my records, however that was a long time ago and my photos are stored.

Looking into the Charles Neal/Neel you mentioned in Laurens Co.,SC shows his birth as 1780 born in Lauens Co. SC. Our Charles was in Newberry, SC and moved to Giles County, TN. I am not sure that the Hugh O'Neall you show listed is ours, however could be kin somehow. Hugh O'Neall 1698-1754 born at Shanes Castel in Antrim, Ireland, and the dad of Hugh O'Neal born in 1740, the one which you show in Laurens County, SC. One of Hugh's sons, William O'Neal, shows to have been born in Delaware and died in Bush River, Newberry, SC. So there is some type of kinship associated with the O'Neal's and our O'Neal/Neal's. William O'Neal had a son Hugh, who was married to Anne Kelly. Their son, John Belton O'Neal co-authored a book called the "Annals of Newberry." Still haven't connected any of them to our Neal's.

Need to locate the land records of the sale of the Charles Neal's Bush River land, in Newberry, SC. I think the will you show is in Laurens County, SC and the land which went to Charles (younger) was located in Newberry, SC.

I hope some of this is of help to you and in your future research of our Neal's/O'Neal's. I hope that one day we can get this puzzle correct and can get the records back to Ireland with our ancestors.

The fartherest back I show our Charles Neal (younger) is at Newberry District, SC, so I know I have that correct. Going backwards from Charles Neal (younger) is the problem, his parents, and where he was born for sure. Also family connections before him and back to Ireland. Which one was the imigrant... O'Neal or Neal? I have a distant cousin who says we were MacNeil's back to Scotland, with Kisimul Castle located on Isle of Barra. He actually went there and visited it several years ago. However, I haven't seen info getting from those possible ancestors to Charles Neal in Newberry District, SC.

When we visited Newberry, SC several years ago, we spent a day at the Newberry Library, and still nothing for sure.

If you can add anything to any of this, please feel free to input. Anything is appreciated!

Sue
