The SC Department of Mental Health maintains a cemetery off of Farrow Rd in Columbia for those patients that do not have assets with which to be buried. The department's archival section should be able to assist you with your search. You may contact them at:

Hope this helps. They may not be able to release information to you directly but should be able to share the location of the cemetery where you could search for yourself. At that period of time I believe that they only placed the patient's hospital identification number on the marker whereas now the patient's name is placed on the marker.
