I'm not real familiar with Sumter County but I have been working with plats and maps and saw a Tearcoat Creek that runs into Black River. There's an area in Darlington called Tans Bay and I've seen it spelled Tavis Bay on an early census index and Farrs Bay in an 1874 Marion Co. newspaper obit, both results of handwriting that is difficult to read. Some of the maps on the link below show Tearcoat. Hope this helps.
