James, the census I referred to is 1850 York District, York Co, SC. My source was NARA microfilm-Series432, Roll 860, stamped page #251. The Family # is 1394. I have gone back and forth about whether this John and Eliza are my ancestors. The ages are 10 years "off". The childrens' names and ages roughly match up to the ones on the 1860 Marion Co, AL census, though. If the parents ages are correct in 1850, it is almost impossible for them to be the parents of my Mary Doster. Information passed on to me by my family says that John's wife was Louisa Eliza Boyd, but I have no documentation.
A few doors down on this 1850 census is HH of Elizabeth Doster ( related?).

It is interesting that family lore also says that John's second wife was Nancy Black. 1870 Carroll Co, MS census has John and Nancy Doster and family. I wonder if she is connected to your Black family?
