Information I found on early Settlers of Jo Daviess County

Scace Family, Early SettlersEdgar Scace came to Warren in the year 1854 and bought a farm over the line in Wisconsin, 2 miles from town. He returned to his home in Schnectady NY and moved out to the farm in 1855 where he remained until 1862 when he bought the "Scace Farm" on the western edge of the village of Warren. Here he remained until the end of his life July 24, 1899.Edgar Scace was the son of Edwin and Dinah Birch, his wife, and was born in England on May 16, 1818. When Edgar was a child of four his parents landed in Albany NY in 1822. Here they remained for a time and then moved to Schnectady, where the father died. The mother came to Warren in the 1850's and died at her son's home on Oct. 19, 1874, aged about 75 years and 8 months. Edgar Scace had four sisters as follows:
Margaret Scace married William Buell of Albany and had three children.
Mary Scace, another of Edgars sisters, married John Foster, who was born in Albany in 1822 and died on his farm near Warren in 1876. She was born in 1827 and died in 1890. The Fosters had six children. John H Foster their eldest, married Josephine Meyer of Cincinatti, and lived ther until coming to Warren in 1898. John H. had a son Edward, a batchelor, who died in Florida in 1928 and a daughter Florence Foster, deceased, who married Charles Ryckman and lived in Warren. The second child of Mary and John Foster, Margaret married Byron Wilcox and lived in Clinton Wisconsin, where she died. He then married her sister Elizabeth Foster. He had issue by each marriage. Harriett Foster the fourth child of Mary Scace and John Foster married James Winegar of Clinton Wisconsin and had a son. Ida Foster 1863-1918 married Perry Watson Mc Kibben 1858-1918, and spent the later years of her life in Warren, the mother of three sons and a daughter. Edgar Foster, the youngest child of Mary and John, married and resides in Warren.
Edgar Scace's third sister Harriet Scace married Joseph Swain and had no issue. Edgar Scace's fourth sister Eliza Scace, first married Richard Burns, who was born in Albany. He died in the army during the Civil War, leaving two sons. One, Edward Burns married Lyle Lynch, daughter of William Lynch of Warren and neice of Matthew Lynch, and lives now (1930) in Warren father of two daughters. The other Burns Boy, Christopher, married Jennie, daughter of J. Rufus Welty 1830-1917, an early settler near Warren and who died in Warren. The young wife died in 1918 mother of three sons and a daughter.By her second marriage Eliza (Scace) Burns became Mrs. E. W. McArdle. Her husband was a veteran of the Civil War and was born in 1839 and died in 1906. Their son William McArdle married Jennie Grape and lives in Warren, father of a son and a daughter. Mrs Eliza (Scace) McArdle was born in 1838 and died in Warren in 1922.
Edgar Scace married twice. His first wife, whom he married in 1837 was Julia Trowbridge, who resided near Scnectady, where she was born in 1820. She died in 1848 the mother of five children. Stephen Birch Scace the first child of the first marriage, was born at Schnectady in 1838 and died in 1915. He married Amelia Sincox, daughter of Samuel Sincox, of Scales Mound Illinois. His daughter Mary married John Scofield and lived at Wayne and at Kimball Nebr., mother of a son and two daughters. Edgar Scace's second child by his first marriage, was James Edgar Scace, a bachelor, who lived in Warren. He was born Feb 14 1840 and died on July 15, 1869. Charles Edwin Scace, the third child of the first marriage, died on Jan. 17, 1881 at the age of 38 years. He married Anna Sanford, a daughter of Robert Sanford, of Warren and a sister of George Sanford, a veteran of the Civil War, who was killed by lightening in the early 1870's while driving along side the old Fair Grounds near the Stone Mill in Warren. Charles E. Scace lived in Warren and had five children as follows: Edgar married Cora Mullen of Scales Mound Ill., Elizabeth married Frank Clock and lives in Warren; Mary married Frank Smith, of Warren; Julia married Charles Reynolds, of Warren and Fred Scace married Eda Hartsough of South Wayne Wisconsin. William Buell Scace, the fourth child by Edgar Scace's first marriage was a veteran of the Civil War. He died April 15, 1917 at Spokane Washington. He married Mathilda Cabel of Iowa and lived at Hampton Iowa, Chicago Ill., and North Dakota. he was the father of three sons and a daughter. Mary Scace was Edgar Scace's youngest child by his first marriage. She is the wife of William Samual Stow, son of Jedediah S, Stow, and lives on Main Street in Warren.
In 1849 Edgar Scace married his second wife, Ann Shannon, who was born in Schnectady on June 27, 1823 and died in Warren on Jan. 12,1900, the mother of five children as follows: Jennie Scace the first child of this second marriage by Edgar Scace, married Sidney Pangburn of Schnectady, and lived on a farm near Warren.She died on Nov. 30, 1873 leaving a son and a daughter. Her son, Charles Pangburn, born Jan 29, 1872 died June 28, 1890. Her daughter F. Lionne Pangburn born Nov. 24, 1873 died October 10, 1874. The second child of the second marriage was Annie E. Scace June 22, 1852-Jan 23, 1865. Eva Scace, the third child by the second marriage, was born 185? and died at Warren on Jan, ?,1899. She married William Samual Stow by whom she had three children. Raymond Stow 1881-188?, Ethel Stow who married Professor Lewis Reisner, of Sterling Illinois now a farmer near Warren and a son Jedidiah S. Stow 1886-190?. The Reisners have three promising children- Jedediah S., Mary Loiuse, and Lewis A. Reisner Jr. Edgar Scace's fourth child by his second marriage was Carrie, born on Nov. 16, 1858 and died on Aug. 15, 1864. Frank Scace was the youngest child of Edgar Scace and was born in 1856. He died at Primghar Ia in 1917. Frank married Lillian May Buser daughter of Levi Buser who was a settler of 1857. The couple ran the "Scace Farm" on the edge of Warren until 189? when they moved to Primghar. Six children blessed this union. They were Dr. Lee A. Scace, who died in the state of Washington in 1922, Fay Scace, who resides in Corinth Iowa, Jennie Scace who married Norman Rapelea and lives in Yankton S. Dak., Guy Scace, eho is married and lives in the state of Washington, Warren Scace who married then enlisted for the World War and died in 1917 and Charles Scace who married and lives near Primghar.
The Scace were prominent among the early settlersand even excersised a whole some influence in the community. Mr. Edgar Scace was an honorable man, of his word. He had a kindly heart, and never held back in giving material and other aid to the needy. He followed farming, devoted his energies to stock raising and live stock dealing.
