I have recently received a copy of the original marriage bond for Peter Scaggs and Marthey COHUN from Montgomery Co, VA, dated June 24th, 1788. Martha's last name on the bond is clearly given as COHUN, not Cothron, Catherine, Cotton, or Patrick, as has been variously stated. So we can surmise her name was most likely some form of this phonetic spelling: Cohun, Cohen, or Coen. Unless someone has proof that the person writing the original bond had her name wrong, this seems to clearly indicate that her name was Cohun.

Was she Indian? She may have been. The marriage bond does not seem to settle that one way or the other.

Please contact me if you would like a copy of this bond, or anyone who wants can order a copy directly from Montgomery Co.
