Dear Asylynne Walz,
While I don't know what the name Scaggs means or where it originated; I do have some more information about the Scaggs' in Laurel & area. Scaggsville is named for them. As you know it is located between Laurel, Md. and Savage, Md. Charles Scaggs and his family moved here from Wheeling, West Virginia (probably shortly after the Civil War. I haven't been able to nail down the exact date - though. Charles and Rhoda had at least 5 children. At least 5 children I have been able to verify. As they are all buried at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church located on Route 216 in Scaggsville. The cemetary is located behind the church. I believe that Charles had at least two brothers living in the area. Because Rhoda's main reason for moving here was to secure a husband for Dora. Charles and Rhoda had 2 daughters and 3 sons. Mary Belle Scaggs m Lawrence J. Schaffer and had no children. Charles Albert m Martha Leishear and I don't know how many children they had. Dora m Lemuel Welsh and they had 2 sons and 6 daughters. William m Georgianna Coon and they had no children as William had a physical defect that made it impossible for him to father. Jimmy Scaggs also married but I don't know to whom, though i think that he also had children.
I have to go, the Library is closing. Hope that this helps, FAY Schneider
