Same family, spelled two ways

I am looking for any lead on a Richard V.Scaggs born in Ky. in about 1830. Married to a Margaret Thompson, she was supposedly part Mississippi Choctaw. They lived in the Edwardsville, Ill. area around 1867, and in Ozark county Mo. about 1869. Later moved to Oklahoma, around Caddo co. and McClain county. Some of the family spells the name Scaggs, some Skaggs. Ive hit a wall and need help. Thanks a lot, Cynthia
