Sally, As far as family legend goes, Lawrence Scanlan and his mother were the only ones of a large family to survive the potato famine.Supposedly, they left Ireland in 1846 and she subsequently died in 1853 perhaps in England.Lawrence was my great-grandfather and from all accounts, had no Irish accent at all because of having grown up some where other than Ireland. He may have come from Clare although family oral tradition says Mayo. Mayo could have been his wife's birthplace, her surname was Higgins.I found no record of the family in Mayo (Ballina) and think maybe Lawrence came from the Cork area. Just a guess.Thanks.
