My mother's father, Alexander (Sandy), lived at Binscarth, Orkney. It's true that the family descends from Alvar Haroldsson, whose descendents settled in Orkney in the 1400s. Sandy had two brothers, James (Jim) and Robert (Bob). Jim was killed in WW1. Bob married Hester Dickie and continued to live at Binscarth while my grandfather married Margaret (Peggy) Cleland and moved to a farm near Peebles. Bob and Hester had no children, but my grandfather had four children, Margaret Emily (Emily) Scarth, Frances Mary (Fay, my mother)Scarth, Robert Scarth, and Alexander Doxford (Peggy's mother was a Doxford of Sunderland) Scarth. Robert and Alex both moved to New Zealand in the 1960s, and each had two children - Helen, Andrew, Robert and Fiona. Robert remains in New Zealand, whilst Alex, Emily and Fay all live in Ripon, North Yorkshire, close to their mother's childhood home in nearby Sharow.
Binscarth remains in the family, being inhabited by the Scarth's cousins, the Macraes.
