Kevin: Harry Mengen Scarth is in my family tree, ninth generation. Harry's grandfather Thomas ( 1762-1835?) was my g.g.grandfather Jonathan's brother. It's an interesting line....their sister Eleanor (1765-1828) married Admiral Sir Robert Moorsom, commander of HMS 'Revenge' at the Battle of Trafulgar in 1805. Thomas sr. was born in Whitby and lived in Staindrop, Co.Durham where he was the agent to the Duke of Cleveland at Raby Castle. In about 1884/5 he married Eliz.Freshfield (1760-1786) and in 1786 they had one son, Thomas Freshfield (1786-1872). Thomas Freshfield married Mary Milbank in 1812 and their son Harry Mengdon Scarth was born in 1814. The Rev. Harry Mengdon married Lizza Hamilton in 1842 and they had a family of six including Leveson Edward, but that's another story.

My g.g.grandfather Jonathan (1772-1850) was also born in Whitby, Yorkshire and in 1795 moved to Manchester where, with money from his father Thomas of Stakesby (1736-1825) and uncle Robert Moorsom he started his own industrial revolution by buying one of James Watt's first steam engines for his cotton mill in Manchester. When Napoleon closed the Continent to (cotton) trade, Jonathan was bankrupted and in 1809 moved to Youghall, County of Cork in Ireland.I think my great grandfather Henry Scarth (1812-1896) was born in Youghal(l), as were his two sisters, Emilia (b.1821) and Louisa (b.1823) and a brother, Robert Moorsom (b.1817). Do you have a contact in that part of the world who could confirm those birth records?

My great grandfather Henry moved to England in ca.1824 with his family, then based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. After a year (1832/'33, no record found) up at Cambridge he took passage to Canada in the Spring of 1834...if someone has seen his name on a passenger list I would appreciate the contact. Henry met Rachel Stinson ( 1816-1864) from Co.Roscommon ( or Sligo) in Ireland on board ship and the two were married (no record found) in 1835 in Perth County, Ontario.

In summary, my line reads as follows: (1) William of Carlton 1525-1587; (2) Francis of Hinderwell 1535-1600; (3) Thomas of Hinderwell 1560-1634; (4) John of Hinderwell 1584- ? ; (5) Richard of Staithes 1608-1686; (6) Isaac of Staithes & Whitby 1639-1701; (7) Isaac of Whitby 1686-1760; (8) Thomas of Stakesby 1736-1825; (9) Jonathan of Whitby,Manchester,(Ireland) & Shrewsbury 1772-1850;(10)Henry of (Ireland),England & Canada 1812-1896;(11) William Frederick of Sebringville,Ont.& Virden, Manitoba;(12) Harold St.Clair of Virden & Winnipeg,Manitoba 1889-1971; (13) David St.Clair of Winnipeg & Brentwood Bay,BC 1931- .

The Scarth family of Yorkshire has no connection whatsoever to the Scarths in the Orkneys. Our line originated with Kormakur of Vik in Iceland,(885-947) who may have been the son of one or the other of the first vikings to establish a foothold in Iceland, namely Frodi or Thorgils. His son, Ogmundur of Melur in Midfjordur (907-980) married (2) Dalla, dau. of Onundur 'Sjoni' of Anabrekka. Ogmundur's son was Thorgils 'Skardi'of Melur in Midfjordur (940-1015).Thorgils had a scarred lip and was known as "Skardi". Following the death of his brother Kormakur (Ref.Kormak Saga) in 967, Thorgils founded 'Skarthaborg' (ie. the stronghold of Skarthi)and had a son Thorgils Skardying of Whitby (980-1062).The line continues through Thorkil of Cleveland ca.1045; Uctred of Cleveland, (dispossessed 1069); and finally Willelmus Scarth,ca.1180.

I have most of the b.m.d. dates for each generation and would be willing to share these with Scarth family members as they relate; and I must apologize to you for not responding sooner to your request for information on (our) cousin Harry Mengen Scarth. David S. Scarth
