SCHACHNER - For what it's worth, this is how I know the name to be spelled. I am not related but worked many years for the family.
This is what I know:
Gottfried (Godfrey) Schachner was born 1 November 1840 in Baden, Germany. He died 24 Feb 1915 in Mecklenburg Co. NC. He married in Germany in 1870 Mary Catherine Steffort born 25 Mar 1843 Germany died 8 Feb 1917 Mecklenburg Co. NC dau of Jno. Stickert born Germany per death certificate. They are both buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte.
The 1900 Mecklenburg Co. NC Charlotte Township page 232A states that this mother had 9 children with only 5 living.
Godfrey Schachner's obituary was published in the Charlotte Observer Feb 25 1915. It states that he was born in Baden, Germany and came to this country 34 years ago and for the past 18 years has been a resident of Charlotte. Up to the time he removed to Charlotte had been employed by the R.A.L. at their railroad shops in Laurinburg but after coming to Charlotte retired from work. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. The pall-bearers was Messrs C. W. Gallagher, J. J. Breen, R. F. Parker, T. Arant, J. G. Monohan and F. Flak.
The children that I know of are:
(1) Carl Edward Schachner (17 Jan 1871-9 Feb 1917) wife Martha Caroline Davis (2) Joseph Francis Schachner (30 Apr 1874-15 Dec 1955) never married. (3) Julius Anthony Schachner(Sr.) (14 May 1879-9 Nov 1939) wife Elizabeth Rose McKane, d/o Paul F. and Mary Agnes (Brennan)McKane (4) Katherine Teresa Schachner (4 Jan 1882-23 Apr 1952) husband William Thomas Shelby. (5) Odelia Walburg Schachner (16 Mar 1885-25 Mar 1929) husband David Dennis Draddy, s/o Dennis and Helen (Harrington) Draddy. (6) baby (31 Dec 1887-12 Feb 1888 Laurinburg, NC. All of the others died in Mecklenburg Co. NC.
I know that Godfrey Schachner, wife and first 3 children came to America through New York City in 1880 as their daughter Katherine was born in America. They remained in New York for a short period after which they came South to Brevard, NC and Laurinburg, NC, finally settling in Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co. NC I know they kept ties with New York as a grandson, Julius A. Schachner Jr. and his Uncle Joe worked together at a tannery owned by Johnson Belting of New York. The tannery was in Brevard, NC. Through this association, they learned and became known for their expertise in textile and leather related industries.
Julius and Joe opened their first leather plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, incorporated 8 Feb 1927 and registered in Greenville, SC. In the beginning, they were distributors of flat leather belting for Johnson Belting Company. A copy of a letter addressed to Mills Mill #2 of Woodruff, SC remained in the Company files written by Johnson Belting Company stating this It was dated August 10 1927. In 1932, Schachner Leather and Belting had been recognized as a source of quality and dependability and relocated to a building on West 4th Street in Charlotte, NC which had housed the old Coca Cola Bottling Plant. From there, they moved to South Mint Street and in 1954 built their own plant on West Boulevard where they remained until recently. I worked for them as their Office Manager from 1966 to 1986 when we moved away from Charlotte. I enjoyed my research with their full knowledge and permission of their family and left them a set of family files which I know they treasured. They were very dear to me. If I can be of any assistance to the Schachners of Mecklenburg Co. NC, I'll be glad to assist any way that I can.
