Some time after posting the Rene Eugene Scheffer and Plante connection found in the 1880 census, I found a civil war pension application for him.Rather than being just a few years older than Blanche Mathais in 1880, he was many years older, a civil war veteran and possibly a regular in the army from New York stationed in Des Moines.
Unfortunately, NARA was unable to locate his pension records, claiming they may have been taken many years ago, so that research avenue ended. The index remains, however.
So my Scheffer/Plante connection has to be broken.
I think the bad connection I made might haunt me for some time.
Here is what I found in DC.

Buried in Woodland Cemetery, Des Moines, Polk Co., IA.Sec. 11, lot 195.
He was a sergeant.
His cemetery records show that he died 4 Jan. 1917, and his son was born a month after his father's death in 1917.
If you are looking for the younger Rene, do check the 1880 census where a small child was found with the Plante family and may have been the grandson of these people. If so, look to Canada for information.
