Hi Tim,

Depending when he or his family immigrated could be a reason for a name change. If someone came through Ellis Island surnames, because of language, were misunderstood by the clerks and thus recorded wrong.

My family name was orginally spelled Scheidt but the "T" was eventually dropped so the name became less German.

According the the Cassels Dictionary the name Scheid means a boundry or border, or limit, divide or parting. Another meaning is a case or a sheath.

Names were often given to familys to either describe where they lived or what their profession was.

The boundry, border, divide, or parting is used when referring to a river. A case or sheath is used when talkimg about swords and such.

So your spelling of "Scheiding" could have orginated by talking about one or more of the above.

Hope this helps alittle. Different spelling could still be related to you maybe because of the area they settled in and the name changed to fit the place.
