Thanks Christina,

I didn't know that about the correct spelling. Grandpa Scheid (who used to be Scheidt when young) told all the family that he didn't like the old spelling since in English it spelled something different if you dropped every other letter (seriously - but then Grandpa used to pull my leg every time he got a chance so I should have known!). Anyhow, I thought "Scheid" was the corrupted form of the German "Scheidt." Now I know to search for the Scheid spelling in Germany. That ought to be helpful.

I tried Family Search before but never got very far - found mostly what I already had. But Family Search keeps growing every day so I ought to look again - especially with the right spelling.
