Yes they did flip the names because everyone was named for someone. Kids were named for other family member or friends of the family. So they were named John Peter but since dad was John they call the son Peter. Or Mary Catherine was named after their mother Mary so they were called Catherine. In large families you find kids with the same first name and different middle names, or they same names just reversed, Mary Catherine, Catherine Mary. Also sometimes a clue is the first born son if not named for the father maybe the fathers father or mothers father. So Peters father could have been Jacob, I think that was the oldest right? Or his father-in-law was Jacob.

Have the same problem here but I can tell you Johann is German for John and Petrus is German for Peter. So when looking in Germany you may want to look for Johann Petrus Scheid/Schiedt.

If I come across anything I will let you know.
