My Grandfather Charles Sumner Porter, born in Leonidas, MI 20 July 1879, talks about Leonidas and Colon area in the mid 1800's. Gleened info from family tales, stories, and written documentation. I have his story about Caroline Ferris, aged 17 marrying Martin Schellhous in about 1852. Talks of their trip west, by wagon train, and the purchase of their 460 acre ranch near Roseville. Also, after his mothers death in 1885, my grandfather was sent, with his "Uncle John "Jack" Ferris as an escort to stay with the Schellhous Family at their California ranch. The journal also tells of the trip out by train, and his 18 months living with them. Later, he mentions that he visited the original homestead again in the 1950's and visited with Earl.
Would love to correspond with anyone having knowledge of these folks.
I found the Life of Lorancie Schellhous diary on the web. It mentions many of the same people my grandfather mentions in the early days of St. Joseph County, MI specifically the Legg family (Emma Legg was my Grandfather's Mother).
