I am the great, great granddaughter of Martin A. Schellhous(1819-1873). He was born July 1819 in Ohio.He later attended Univ. of Michigan. In March of 1849 he joined the other 49'ers gold seeking with a brother E.J. Schellhous. He traveled across the country via the Santa Fe trail. He arrived in Los Angeles in Feb.1850.chartered a sail boat to San Francisco arriving in April. Chartered another sail boat to take them to Sacramento. They purchased mining equipment in Sacto. and proceeded to mine in the American River, quite sucessfully. In the fall of 1851 he returned to Michigan and married Caroline Ferris in March 1852. The newlyweds returned to California, settled in Dry Creek Area with a Spanish Landgrant. They proceeded to have 11 children, 10 who lived to adulthood. The oldest was Helen, who was my link to the family, and then came George,Martin,Carrie,Loren,John,Stella,Edwin, Annie and Earl. Earl passed away at the ranch in 1960. Many generations now live in this area, now called Antelope,California. We are in northern California, not far from Coloma where gold was first discovered and approx. ten miles from Sutter's Fort where most of the wagon trains were headed, including the ill fated Donner Party. I was born early enough to remember Annie, Carrie and Earl. Lucky enough to have heard stories of early days of Dry Creek, Antelope, Roseville and Sacramento (where I was born). Thanks for your time. I hope I might be part of your family!
