Berndt Schenck van Nijdeggen
On September 9, 1618, Berndt Schenck van Nijdeggen of Emmerijck/Emmerich (Kleve/Cleves region, Germany) married Beeligje Meussen. The marriage is recorded in Dutch Reformed Church records for Wijk bij Duurstede, which lies just south of Amersfoort, Utrecht Province. My ancestor Roelof Martense Schenck was reportedly born at Amersfoort in 1619, but I have yet to see church records about the birth, or the marriage of his parents. Any information about any of the above would be appreciated. Yes, I know that there are several histories pertaining to Roelof’s ancestry, but there are also those who say that the histories have it wrong. Wijk bij Duurstede records have several Van Scherpenzeel entries (and one Boekhorst entry), but not ones which clearly fit Roelof’s purported ancestry. Incidentally, the given name Roelof reportedly was used more in the middle part of the Netherlands (home of Schenck Van Toutenburg) and not much in the south (Limburg was ground zero for Schenck Van Nydeggen for centuries).
Online Utrecht Archives have references to both the Schenck Van Nydeggen & Schenck Van Toutenburg lines. In addition to the Berndt Schenck Van Nijdeggen marriage at Wijk bij Duurstede, the Archbishop Frederik Schenck Van Toutenburg was born at the same location (1503). The bishops of Utrecht held Duurstede Castle. www.castles.nl/duur/duur.htmlSome Schenck people living in Wijk bij Duurstede today may stem from one or both of the Schenck lines. Old records & yDNA are probably the only way that we’ll get Roelof’s, and his brother Jan’s, ancestry sorted out. I’ll do some legwork, but I can’t provide Schenck-surname yDNA.
This website has been recommended to me as a current summary of Schenck Van Nydeggen: www.genbronnen.nl/genealogie/schenck-van-nydeggen/deel-I.html
This may tie into the ancestry of Johannes Schenck (b. 1656) who may or may not have been a cousin to Roelof: Depends upon whom you ask.
