I believe so. It is my understanding that Schiava would be the feminine form of the word and Schiavo would be the masculine form. One meaning I have heard is that the name means "slave".

My great-grandfather came to the U.S. from Termini-Imerese, Sicily, Italy. It is family lore that he had half brothers in Africa. Maybe there might be a connection?!?
