I received the information from my fourth cousin in Missouri, USA. I'm assuming the name is German by origin. Our ancestors came from Germany/Prussia and the name originally was spelled Schlarmann. There are various reasons why the second "n" was dropped by some.My mother had her name changed by the nuns at the Catholic school she attended because they thought it was redundant, others had the second "n" dropped to keep from being confused with the Jews. The name seemed to change during and after WWI.Some family members spell the name with one "n", others still spell it with two.
