Smith/Schmidt family, NY then PA?
Greetings,
I have obtained additional information inresearch that that Smithmay have been Schmidt.I am looking for any information concerning family and ancestors of Henry Smith, b. 1791, and Susannah, b. 1799.
Apparently several brothers (three?) immigrated to the US in 1700s through New York. One stayed in NY, at least one went to PA.The name was changed (apparently from Schmidt) to Smith to better fit in their new country.
Furthest back I can trace is the Smith family in Cumberland County, PA, Henry Smith, b. 1791, and wife Susannah (maiden name not known), b. 1799. (dates from grave stones)
The 1850 census, North Middleton Township, Cumberland County, PA (Carlisle area) shows:
Henry Smith, 58
Susannah 45
George 22
David 21
Henry 13
Emmanuel 10 (died in Civil War)
Samuel 8 (died in Civil War)
Levi F. 6
Eliza Shambaugh 18
Wilhelmina Smith 6 (I think this is correct and she may have married a man named Derr)
Henry Smith b 1791 also had sons Adam and Jacob.
Thanks for any help!
J. Smith
