Names were a lot of times spelled as they sounded: by the store keeper, minister, census taker etc.
On one Deed in Va. the Surname is spelled 3 different ways.
Brother's living across a river or mountain could have different spelled names.
Some one told me;
" Rember back then, Few could read, Less could write, and NOBODY could SPELL "
Alway's check various spellings in the neighbor hood, a different cencus taker or minister may have written that name as he thought it sounded.
