Another thing to keep in mind is that foreign (non English) names were often spelled many ways as an American record keeper struggled with a foreign name. Sometimes the name also changed over the generations after being here for soime time. Two examples in my family are Stoertenbecker (immigrated to Davenport, IA i nthe mid 1800's-I've seen lots of spellings of that one since the spelling is not only difficult but also the German pronunciation) and Grumbach. My Grumbachs came from Germany, appear in the immigration records as Crombach and in various colonial PA and MD records as Crumbach, Grumbach, Krumbach, Croombach, Crumbough, Crumback and Crumbaugh (the latter being the spelling used by most modern American descendants). My Snyder (various spellings) connection by the way is through the Crumbaughs (various spellings) of Frederick Co., MD.
