My grandfather's brother was Karl Schneider, born September 1874. I had always been told that he was a stowaway. He left home before 1894. During that year, my grandfather came to the US to look for him. He started out in NJ, went to NY, and then on to Chicago,IL but was unsuccessful in his search. I know that he was born to a military family in Alsace-Lorraine when it was part of Germany. The family was originally from the Hannover area.
