I am looking for any information on my great great grandmother Susanna Schneider (c. 1856-1947).
In July 1872, upon the death of her mother, the former Dorothy Arnold, Susanna, age 16; her sister, Catherine, 11; and brother, Michael, 10, sailed on The Spain to meet their father, John Schneider, in America. One of the first Germans in Toledo, Ohio, John had "preceded the family here several years."
On the ship’s manifest, Susanna is listed as a spinster – event though she was only 16. Susanna is also listed as "ein Badenserin," meaning that she came from the German region of Baden. Another reference indicates that she was from the Black Forest, which would be consistent, although the exact location is unknown. There are some Schneider family records at Schiltach, Germany, but whether the Schneiders actually resided in Schiltach or nearby is unknown.
After settling in Toledo, Ohio, Susanna married Michael Hoeflinger (1851-1922), an undertaker. They had nine children (possibly ten, according to some accounts):
--J. Edward (1878-1907);
--Gustave (1878-1913);
--Adolph (1885-1918);
--Ida (1890-1907);
--Gertrude (Mrs. Joseph Martin), born c. 1892;
--Philomena “Mina” (Mrs. Frederick Holkenbrink), who was born c. 1894 and lived in Elmore, Ohio.
--Agnes (Mrs. Paul Mermer), who was born in 1896;
--Sophia (Mrs. Charles Dunn), who was born in 1898 and moved to Curtis, Ohio; and
--Theodore, who was born in 1900.
Susanna died July 25, 1947.
