I take it you don't know where he was born?
If he maybe immigrated to the U.S. during the Ellis Island years, you might be able to find record of him coming in. Have you tried that? I did a search at the www.ellisislandrecords.org site, and only 29 Edward Schneiders showed up. All you'd have to do is look down the list for one whose age at arrival and year of arrival would indicate he was born in 1878.
If you can find that record, it should tell you where the family came from. Then you have to start digging overseas.
