Jacob Snyder one of three brothers by the name of Snyder came to America from Holland prior to the Rev. They settled on land in Colombia Co., NY near the Hudson river. The second of the family of whom there is a record, is Jacob II, son of Jacob the emigrant, was also a soldier in the Rev., and on Oct 19, 1781, witnessed the surrender of Lord Cornwallis to Gen.Washington at Yorktown. Children born to him, Maria who married John Dings; Margaret, who married ___Coon; Jacob III; Elizabeth who married ___ Emment, John, who maried Hannah Tish, Tunis, Catharine who married Charles Wademan, and David. Nearly all of these later on came to PA.
Jacob III, was born April 15, 1786 in Colmbia County,
NY., and died in Lackawanna Co., PA., Feb. 17, 1879. His wife, Rebecca Niver, died Feb. 20, 1866, aged 75. Jacob III served in the War of 1812. Rebecca (Niver) Snyder was of German descent, a d/o William Niver,a life long resident of NY state, who also was in the Rev.
To Jacob III and Rebecca (Niver) were born 12 children. Elias, Maria, born 1810 married Daniel English, Sabrina, born 1812, married Angus Cameron of Carbondale, PA., Eilzabeth, born 1815, married Hiriam Lamphere, of Mich., John, born 1817, married Sarah Ann Cobb, Abram, 1819, married Margaret Jane Wemelsorf, Henry born 1821, married Electa Marsh, Jacob B, born 1824, married Elizabeth Decker, Charles, born 1826 of Brndford, PA married Elizabeth Moore, Eleanor, born 1828 married George Decker,Ira, born 1831, lived in NY, married Martha Blansham, Margaret, born 1833, died at 16.
Elias Snyder was born at Claverack, Columbia County, NY, on May 27, 1832 he married Maryanna Stuart, who was born in Scott township,Luzerne Co., June 14 1814 a daughter of William Stuart. who was born in Sligo Ireland, in 1773, one of the 4 children of James Stuart, the others being, Ann, James, Margaret. William and Ann came to America.
William Stuart, came to Scott township, where in May, 1813, he married Cynitha Cone, d/o Calvin and Rebecca (Leete) Cone. Children, Mary Ann, married Elias Snyder, Lousia, born 1816 married Daniel Finch, Elizabeth born Peter Vail, Jane, born 1821, married Jabez Smith/ Ann Stuart married Thomas Montgomery, a native of Ireland. He was a descendant of Gen. Richard Montgomery who fell at Quebec.
