MANCHESTER -- Charles Stephen Schneider, 85, of Prescott Road and formerly a longtime resident of Westervelt Place, Westwood, N.J., died March 3, 2004, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Gray Birch after a brief illness.

He was born in New Bloomfield, Pa., on April 27, 1918, the son of George Garrison Schneider and Dorothy Jean (Jardine) Schneider.

Mr. Schneider served honorably as a captain in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a 1950 graduate of New York University with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as senior planning and scheduling engineer for Burns & Roe of Oradell, N.J., for many years. He was previously employed by General Precision Laboratories of Pleasantville, N.Y., General Electric of New York and National City Bank of New York.

Mr. Schneider was a member and junior warden of St. Mark's Episcopal Church of Augusta. He was previously a member and senior warden of Grace Church of Westwood, N.J., and a life member of Westwood (N.J.) Ambulance Corps.

He was a man who was very dedicated to his family.

Mr. Schneider married Margaret May Kroneman on Jan. 17, 1942, at St. Philips Church in Brooklyn, N.Y. Together they had 11 children.

One son, Arthur Lowell Schneider, predeceased him, as well as two granddaughters, Corinne Schneider and Kristin Schneider Anderson.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret May (Kroneman) Schneider of Manchester; four daughters, Constance Ann Dioszeghy of Cornwall, N.Y., Geraldine Alison Schneider of Poland Spring, Margaret Davis Iaconetti of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Frances Jean Rohr of West Boxford, Mass.; six sons, Charles William Schneider of Granite Bay, Calif., Stephen Edward Schneider of Claremont, Calif., John Adrian Schneider of Washington Township, N.J., Christopher James Schneider of Warren, Daniel Phillip Schneider of Presque Isle and Thomas Justin Schneider of Walpole, Mass.; 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

There will be no public visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Augusta. Spring burial will be in Readfield Corner Cemetery, Readfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, Five Corners, Westwood, N.J. 07675; St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 9 Summer St., Augusta, 04330; or Kennebec Valley Humane Society, Pet Haven Lane, Augusta 04330.
