Researching my great great grandmother, Katherine Schneider Grawey. She was born about 1814 in Alsace Lorraine, France, probably around Mulhouse area. She was married to John Grawey in Alsace Lorraine around 1840. She died 25 April 1882 in Tell City, IN.

Below is everything I know about her:

Family stories tell us that John Grawey came to US with his wife, Katherine Schneider Grawey and their 11 year old daughter, Lena (Maria Magdalena Grawey), in 1854. However, his obituary says they came to the US in the late 1850's. They were married in Alsace-Lorraine. They first resided in Covington, Kentucky. They had a son, also named John Grawey, born in Newport, Kentucky in 1859. They were farmers there. They moved to Tell City, Indiana in 1860. They spoke German and were Roman Catholic. John is buried in St. Murin Catholic Cemetery in Tell City, IN.

In 1880 census, she is listed in Tell City, IN amd 66 years old and as wife of John Grawey and keeping house. Listed as born in Alsace and both parents born in Alsace.

Obituary in Tell City Anzeiger Newspaper - 29 April 1882 - Translated from German:

The wife of Mr. John Grawey died Tuesday morning after a long illness at the age of 68 years. On Wednesday afternoon the deceased was buried in the local cemetery under the usual church customs of the Catholic religion.
