This lot includes a pre-emigration document for German immigrant Heinrich Schneider, his wife Maria Elisabeth, and their children. Heinrich had been born in the village of Immert, Kreis Bernkastel, Prussia (now Germany). I looked up the family in some US Censuses and other old records. By 1850, this German-American family was living and farming in Berne Township, Fairfield County, Ohio. In America, the spelling of the name appears to have been anglicized to "Henry Snider", and I'd note that there are still Sniders living in the Lancaster area today. (I'm hoping this listing may help this heirloom get back into the hands of descendants.)

This document was prepared May 1840 by Pastor J. Schreiber of the evangelical church in Thalfang, near Trier, Germany. The document was prepared in anticipation of the emigration of the Heinrich Schneider family to the United States; a document such as this was a pre-requisite for a passport. It's a treasure-trove for those interested in family history and genealogy.

At the time of issue in the spring of 1840, the family was composed of the following members, and all are listed on the paper:
Johann Heinrich Schneider, born 1793
wife Maria Elisabeth, born 1796
son Johann Philipp, born 1820
son Georg Heinrich, born 1823
son Johann Georg (George), born 1826
son Johann Friedrich (Frederick), born 1828
son Georg Magnus, born 1830
daughter Anna Elisabeth, born 1834

The document also mentions the son Johann Jacob, who was born in 1816 but died in 1821. Exact dates of birth and confirmation are given. The couple's date of marriage is also mentioned. The pastor attests that the family belongs to his church. Includes a stamped seal. 13" x 7.75". Writing on one side only. The entire document is in the German language and written in Old German Script.

Original. Not a reproduction. Very good overall condition. Item has been folded and there are minor tears along the fold lines.

I'm afraid I had already sold Henry Snider's passport when I discovered that another batch of documents was related, but I'm putting all the related documents I currently own up on eBay this week. Click on "view seller's other items" above to see the other documents related to this family which I have for sale this week, including Heinrich's military discharge papers (6545084046), another pre-emigration document (6545084660), and a letter to Heinrich from a brother in New York (6545077588).
====================================================

I have no connection to this family or to the Seller, but, try to do whatever I can by posting these to make sure these treasures make it back to their homes.
