Jacob Schneider was born 30 Dec 1845 in Keskastel, Bas-Rhin, France (formerly Nassau-Saarwerden in between Alsace & Lorraine). His parents were Johann Adam Schneider and Charlotte Catharina Mager. It appears the entire family immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Franklin County, Ohio. Jacob married 29 March 1872 to Mary Allen Barrett and the 1880 census showed they had three sons. The youngest was Jacob Schneider who was 2 years old in the 1880 census, indicating a birth year of about 1878. A marriage record for the young Jacob Snyder to Lizzie Leiter on 12 October 1910 states that he was 35 years of age on 11 Feb. 1910. The marriage record also gave his father's name as Jacob Snyder and mother's maiden name as Barrett. His birth place was shown as Columbus, Ohio. However, a 1st World War Draft Registration Card which also gave his date if birth as 11 Feb. 1878, however, the draft card named his sister Mamie Dague as his nearest relative. So what is the mystery? The 1900 Census of Plain Twp., Franklin County, Ohio shows Mamie as wife of Edward DAGUE, age then 19 with a birth of April 1881. However, by 1910, May Dague, age 29 is listed in the home of Charles F. and Mary E. Gravina. Interestingly this couple were married as Fred Gravinia and Mary Ellen (Snyder), daughter of Thomas Hall and Jane Davis. Marriage record indicates Snyder was her married name. The mystery is how could Jacob Snyder, with a birth date of 11 Feb. 1878 (2years old in 1880 census)have been a son of Jacob Schneider/Snyder and Mary Ellen Barrett as indicated in his marriage record yet be a brother to Mamie (May) Dague, who was daughter of Mary Ellen (Hall) (Snyder) Gravina. It is known that Jacob Schneider Sr. died in 1885 and that his widow Mary Ellen (Barrett)Schneider was married second to Christian Finger on 4 Oct 1888. I find it interesting that census records show both these ladies Mary Ellen Barrett Schneider Finger and Mary Ellen Hall Schneider Gravina were born in Ohio and both of their parents were born in New Jersey. Yet Census records also show both living at the same time indicating they were not the same person or were they? Any help from anyone familiar with Franklin County records and Schneider/Snyder/Snider family welcome. John V. Reeb Notify Administrator about this message?
