I've found out more about Thomas Jefferson Schooner since I have finally received his obit. He is my great-greatgrandfather, father to Pearl Schooner my great-grandmother whom I knew before she died.
This Thomas also had a son named Thomas G. Schooner. I also have his obit now.
In the obituary of my great-great grandfather, (Thomas Jefferson Schooner married to Mary LaViere of Paris, France) it says he was born on 10-7-1837 on the banks of the Sandusky River near Sandusky, Ohio (they may have meant Sandusky County, Ohio) to the parents of Elihu and Mary Schooner, both full blooded Mohawk Indians. I have searched through the Ohio Historical Society and they show no tribes of Mohawks in Ohio. Are they part of another tribe? None of these names sound like native Indian names. Were they being forced onto reservations and being 'Americanized' or something? This really has me baffled and I'm not sure where to turn next. I would like to know more about this important part of my heritage. Any clues as to where to go from here would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
