I am interested in the ou spelling because my mother's father's name was Shoults and we trace them back to the eighteenth century in London, England but we don't yet know where they came from prior to 1773. We suspect the ou spelling in England was Schoultz or a phonetic equivalent on the continent. Certainly the spelling Schoultz is ancient and found in Sweden in the 1600s and elsewhere in Europe at different periods. It's very difficult to work out whether the name Schoultz is Dutch, German, Swedish, Finnish, French, etc.
Perhaps somebody posting on this forum has researched the name spelling thoroughly through history and can tell us.
