I think I got it now. Mahala Ryther has to be Elizabeth Schuler.Mahala must be her nickname.
In the 1900 U.S. Census, in Carthage Township, Athens, Ohio, Page 122, I found:
Rither, John, Head, 10/1839, 60, married 38 years, OH, GERM, GERM, Farmer
Rither, Mahala, Wife, 11/1843, 56, married 38 years, 12 children/8 alive, OH, MA, OH
Rither, George, Son, 1/1864 , 36, widowed, OH, OH, OH, Farm Laborer
Rither, Elizabeth, Daughter, 1/1882, 18, single, OH, OH, OH
Rither, Charles, Son, 10/1885, 14, single, OH, OH, OH, Farm Laborer
Rither, Alice C., Granddaughter, 10/1894, 5, single, OH, OH, OH
John and Mahala Rither have a daughter Elizabeth Rither born January 1882, in Carthage Township, Athens, Ohio. Close enough to Elizabeth Ryther.
In the 1860 U.S. Census, in Chester Township, Meigs Co., Ohio, Page 263B, I found:
Schuler, John, 51, M, W, Farmer, Germany
Schuler, Marg H., 47, F, W, Germany
Schuler, Joseph, 19, M, W, Farm Laborer, Ohio
Schuler, Anthony, 17, M, W, Ohio
Schuler, Elizabeth, 14, F, W, Ohio
Schuler, Mary H., 11, F, W, Ohio
John and Marg H. Schuler have a daughter Elizabeth born 1846 in Ohio.Close enough to Mahala Ryther.
In the 1860 U.S. Census, in Carthage Township, Athens Co., Ohio, Page 260, I found:
Ryther, Leonard, 51, M, W, Farmer, Germany
Ryther, Susan E., 54, F, W, Germany
Ryther, George, 25, M, W, Germany
Ryther, John, 20, Apprentice to Blacksmith, Germany
Ryther, Catharine, 16, Germany
I think this is your John Ryhter even though the census taker wrote born in Germany instead of Ohio.
