Helene Edith Hemstad Schuller was born on February 26, 1921 on the prairie of Saskatchewan Canada; passed September 17, 2009 at the Sienna Care Facility in Auburn.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Michael Peter Schuller of 56 years who died in 1999. She is survived by her son Michael, daughter Marie and Linda Glendenning who looked on Helene as her Auntie Mom, her grandchildren Lisa, Karen, Kimberly, Brian and six great grandchildren.
Helene became a teacher in 1961 and taught in three different Seattle schools before retiring in 1983. She took great pride in teaching inner city children Biology, Chemistry and the earth sciences. She involved her students in research with the Audubon Society and a career in science. After retirement she focused her energy on helping friends as well as community involvement. She spent countless hours raising money for the Alpine Boys Ranch, a Christian home in Leavenworth, Washington. Her dedication and love of her family was one of the guiding lights of her life. Family was everything to Helene as she loved to visit them and offer her support. She was a wonderful neighbor and was involved in the neighborhood watch program and helped her neighborhood friend's plant gardens of fruits and vegetables. She was a wonderful cook and baker and holidays were a special time for family celebrations with wonderful meals. She loved the outdoors and joined her husband and son on many fishing trips. She especially loved to go clamming and berry picking. She was not one to sit back and watch when a project was going on. She took several carpentry classes so she could work side by side with the other construction workers when her house was being remodeled. Her ambition and thoughtfulness throughout her life was a credit to all of us and she will always be remembered for this. Helene is at peace now and in the loving arms of our Lord.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lincoln at 2 p.m. on Friday the 25th of September followed by a celebration of her extraordinary life at the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer's Association .
