Richard Evans (Schultes ?) - Amazon explorer
Some time ago on CBC (Canadian public radio) there was a fascinating account of Richard Evans Schultes (sp?) who spent at least 12 years or more in the Amazon jungles - I believe in the area in Colombia or Venezuela more than in Brazil (I don't remember all the details). He was evidently a professor whose stories of life in the Amazon inspired a number of his students to go there and make new discoveries of their own. I believe the time period was just before World War II, but I could be wrong.
Richard Evans (Schultes) wrote "The End of the Wild" (date ?) which described how the primeval jungle was being changed forever by the hand of man, and he seemed to despair about its future viability. Another gentleman, Wade Davis, evidently wrote a biography of Richard Evans Schultes titled "One River".
Can someone posting here tell us more about this most fascinating man who seemed to capture the fading essence of the wild jungle, just as it was disappearing forever ? How does he fit in with the others of the same surname ?
NOTE: I will post this same message on forums with similar spellings of the surname.
