I purchased the subject studio portrait of a young woman and an infant boy taken by Rockwood, New York, NY. It is identified on the back of the mount in period ink handwriting:

"Emil Frederick von Bernuth
Age, 10 months, 1895-
Pauline von Bernuth-"

This mother and son pair appear in Public Member Trees posted on ancestry.com. Pauline E. Schultz, born 8 Dec 1873 in New York, NY, died 14 Jan 1954 in Kerhonkson, NY, was the daughter of a mineral water manufacturer, Carl Herman Schultz (1827-1897), and Louise M. Eisfeldt (1843-). She married Frederick Augustus von Bernuth, Jr., born 4 Mar 1865 in Newark, Essex Co., NJ. The couple had two children: Emil Frederick von Bernuth, born 13 May 1894 in New York, NY, died 26 Jan 1970 in Saint Lucie Co., FL. Frederick and Pauline divorced and on 14 Nov 1911 she married a physician, Andrew Green Foord (1876-1950). That marriage produced two children: Andrea K. Foord (1913-1985) and Alan M. Foord (1915-1995).

Pauline is listed in the 1880 U.S. Census data for New York City (resided on W. 136th Street), New York Co., NY; the 1915 New York State Census data for Wawarsing, Ulster Co., NY; the 1920 U.S. Census data for Wawarsing (resided at Foord Sanitarium), Ulster Co., NY; the 1925 New York State Census data for Wawarsing, Ulster Co., NY; the 1930 U.S. Census data for Wawarsing (resided at Nonkanchwa Sanitarium), Ulster Co., NY; and the 1940 U.S. Census data for Warwarsing, Ulster Co., NY.

Emil adopted his stepfather's surname and went by Emil Foord. He is listed in the1915 New York State Census data for Wawarsing, Ulster Co., NY; the 1920 U.S. Census data for Elizabeth City (resided at 21 Sayre Street), Union Co., NJ; and the 1930 U.S. Census data for Union (resided at 1028 Sterling Rd.), Union Co., NJ. His WWI and WWII draft registration cards are available. He married at least twice. In 1922, he married Florence (maiden name unknown), born about 1896 in NJ. The couple had at least one child, John Abby Foord, born about 1927 in NJ. Emil was employed as a sawmill superintendent in 1917, an oil works foreman in 1920, and a construction assistant superintendent in 1930.
