Schuyler family nY to NJ to NY
Recently I've seen a lot of confusion over the New York and New Jersey Schuyler families, particularly the Morris County NJ and Montgomery County NY connections. A couple of things first; this family used the same names for generations in both the Pieter and David lines, which can cause some confusion, also there is an error in the Mohawk/Hudson Valleys Memoirs book regarding the Jacob Schuyler born in 1768 who married Martha Fancher. I can not say everything I post here is 100% accurate, but I believe it to be close.
The line I'm tracing is David Pieterse to Abraham to Jacobus to Jacob to Jacob (to Richard to George to James to John David). The Jacob's seem to be where the confusion occurs.
David Pieterse Schuyler married Catalyna Ver Planck in New Amsterdam 13 October, 1657. Children: Peter, Geertruy, Abraham, 1663, Maritje, Davis, Myndert, Jacobus, Catalina and Margaret.
Abraham Schuyler, 1663, married Geertruy Ten Broek 1691 at Albany. Children: David, Christina, Dirck, Abraham and Jacobus, 1707.
Jacobus Schuyler, 1707 married Geertruy Staats November 1735 at Albany. They had eight children including Jacob Schuyler, born at Albany March 24,1734 and baptised at the Dutch Reformed Church there.
Jacob Schuyler,1734, married Eve Swackhammer 1754 in Morris County New Jersey, a daughter of Samuel Swackhammer and his 3rd wife Elizabeth Miller and they had, among many other children, a son named Jacob, born in Morris County New Jersey 29 July, 1768. Jacob and Eve (Swackhammer) Schuyler relocated to Montgomery County in New York with their children.
Jacob Schuyler, 1768, born in Morris County NJ, married there Martha Fancher, a daughter of Sarah Douglas and Richard Fancher. There were at least 3 marriages in this time period (1780's) between Schuyler's and Fancher's. The Fancher and Swackhammer families were also related.
Jacob and Martha (Fancher) Schuyler raised their family in Montgomery County New York including: Jacob, 1788, Richard, 1789, Jeremiah, 1794, Catherine, 1800 Thomas, 1802 and Effie, James, and William, for whom I have no dates.
There were at least 5 different Schuyler families in Northern New Jersey during the 1700's, all descended from Pieter, David or both. The same held true in the Mohawk valley in New York. It is almost impossible for someone to keep it all straight. A benefit of recent years has been the online postings of some Schuyler family bible records as well as the birth/christening/marriage/death records of the various Dutch Reformed Churches. As I said I can't vouch for complete accuracy. If you want a particular source or some other info I'm glad to help if I can, within the parameters of what I've been researching.
