A "schwegel" is a type of 6 holed flute like a fife. However, it is a name that gets frequently misspelled.Of the Schwegels who settled in Millville, New Jersey, one had his birth certificate spelled as Schwegal. As it cost too much money in those days to change it back, henceforth his descendants all have the last name of Schwegal instead of their ancestoral name of Schwegel.I do not know of that particular misspelling but it could be possible.
I am currently compiling a family tree chart for all Schwegels in the US.There seem to be some distinct branches.I think we have narrowed down the area in Germany that my branch originated from as the Pfalz area of Germany.Towns that are possibilities are Behren, Frankford a.M., and Homburg (spelled with an "o" and not an "a").
