Wow! That's great that your mom has lots of info! I started off researching "blind"...but I'm getting there!
I've never been to Sicily personally, but I have written to Santa Croce for records (birth, death, marriage). They're a bit on the slow side as far as responding, it usually takes about 6 months and a follow up letter - but the information is well worth the wait.
I did find something interesting on Ancestry.com that led me to a surviving 100 yr old cousin of my grandfather. They have a section for 'World Trees' and I found one for a Domenica Scillieri (who turned out to be the sister of my great-grandmother). Someone in her family posted their family tree and the Scillieri portion goes back to 1601!!!! From that tree, I noticed the Scillieris have alot of intermarrying with the Carfi, Iurato, DiStefano and Fiorilla families. You should check it out if you have a chance.
