I have an ancestor (great great grandmother) named Matilda Scofield who married Aquila/Aquilla Owen(s) in Kentucky, and she was listed as having been born in Ohio from one source and N.J. from another source. The age would have been about right. She could be the M. Scofield you found, or she could be a sibling. I am not sure this will help. I am seeking info on my Matilda: where was she actually born? My Owens came from Kenton Co., KY, which is directly across the river from Cincinatti, Ohio. I have always wondered if she had been born in N.J. and moved later with her family to Ohio. I have also wondered if she could have been Swedish, just because (here is one of those TOTALLY untrustworthy "leads") my mother always said there was some Swedish in our background, and there is none anywhere that I have found -- very definitely all English, Welsh, Scottish, and Irish. But New Jersey was the place that was settled in large number by Swedish immigrants very early.
The Swedish and the Dutch immigrants apparently quarrelled and the Dutch sort of ran out many of the Swedish, according to some history I read quite a few years back. (That, too, might be one of those untrustworthy leads!).
If you believe that we have ancestors in common, I would be glad to communicate with you. My Matilda Scofield Owen(s) moved to Southern Illinois and died there, by the way.
